2009 Projects...

Derbyshire Crimebeat Icon‘National Crimebeat Awards’

Project Generation Overload
Here are the top three-winning entries of the National Crimebeat Awards In front of the London Eye. Wilsthorpe School, Long Eaton came third, with their entry “Choices” winning £500.

The finalists met up at a London hotel where there was an award ceremony followed by a lunch. We all then got onto an open topped double decker bus for a tour around the City (the guide was hilarious), ending up at the London Eye.

It was a great day out and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Derbyshire Crimebeat Icon‘Tideswell Youth Club’

Tideswell Youth Club
The High Sheriff visited Tideswell youth club on Wednesday 7th October 2009 to present a cheque to the organisers and the young people. The cheque for £550 was to assist in the purchase of a new pool table, table tennis table and air hockey table. The old equipment had become damaged and was unserviceable.

The group had initially requested £750, but they had carried out a sponsored walk and had made a fantastic sum of just over £200. Congratulations to all those that took part, that was a really good achievement.

The new equipment will now enable the youth club, which has a strong one night a week following to open up for a second night.

Derbyshire Crimebeat Icon‘PROJECT GENERATION OVERLOAD’

Project Generation Overload Back in spring this year Derbyshire Crimebeat approached the School to ask if it was possible to create a documentary based in the local community dispelling the stereotypical views young people had of the older generation and visa versa. They informed us that the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Sir Henry Every would provide a limited amount of funding to assist us to achieve this goal.

After speaking to the student voice committee, it was decided that this could be possible with a lot of hard work, skill and determination. The relevant application was completed and received with a resounding thumbs up. On September 24th the High Sheriff, along with local Crimebeat officers, Youth Service Workers, and the local Police were invited to the School to present the cheque and speak to the students initially involved with the application and get their views and ideas about the forthcoming film.

Without giving too much away, the film will be information based, with a humorous theme, and involve members, both young and old in the local community.

Derbyshire Crimebeat Icon‘Young Offenders Art’

Young Offenders Art

In 2005 the Probation Service put forward a project to enable young offenders working with them to express their experience of the criminal justice system in an art form. The project proved so successful it formed the basis of another competition for all young people in the county through 2006.

The pattern was then repeated in 2006/7 with the work of the young offenders receiving many plaudits both within the county and further afield.

Some of the art work has been used in the entrance areas of Probation Service premises. Also, the use of their work in the booklets circulated to all schools and youth clubs have given the young offenders great pride. A similar project has been funded in 2007.

Supported: £750

Derbyshire Crimebeat Icon‘Boat for Sea Cadets’

Boat for Sea Cadets The Sea Cadets of Chesterfield application was the first received by Crimebeat from a Cadet unit of the Armed Forces. It was interesting to find out that the Sea Cadets are an individual charity and received limit funding from the Royal Navy.

The Cadets took the opportunity to request the High Sheriff, Roger Wardle to attend in Court Dress so the visit could be treated in a formal manner. The cadets were in full uniform for the visit. The application for the older Cadets sought funding for the purchase of a small boat to be used on water nearby. The Cadets could then work with new recruits on training skills for their development in the Cadet service.

Offenders on Art

Following the tremendous success of a similar project run by the Probation Service and supported in 2005. A similar event in the Autumn of 2006 attracted many more entries by young offenders across the county.

Their work is focussed on their experience of the Criminal Justice System and many poems and stories of their experiences carried valid points and reminders for other members of the community, not only young people.

The work entered in the 2005 competition formed a booklet for the county-wide art competition in 2006.

The work from this competition will form the basis for a booklet for the county-wide art competition 2007.
